Rare and complicated backbone operations at Stradins Hospital
May 19, In collaboration with European colleagues Petr Vanek from Prague Military hospital (the Czech Republic) arrived at Pauls Stradins Clinical University Hospital Neurosurgery clinic to perform backbones stabilization operations. He operated two young Latvian patients with rarely observed backbones deformations.
First operation was performed to patient who had deep neurological deficit in relation with atypical cervical vertebrae wickerwork, caused by rheumatoid arthritis. Second operation was performed to patient who had II-III stage of 5th lumbal vertebra spondylolisthesis. During both operations doctors performed backbones stabilization. It would create preconditions for patients’ recovery and improve their life quality.
Viktors Vestermanis, traumatologist and orthopedist from Stradins Hospital, operated together with Czech colleague and emphasized the collaboration: “Similar patients in Latvia are rare, therefore our doctors are missing the experience. Since the visual diagnostic options are increasing, we have to deal with the increasing number of patients. Thus this experience is important.”
Technology companies “Medtronic” and “R.A.L.” assured transportation of operations instruments from the Czech Republic to Latvia and back, as well as Czech doctor expenses were covered.
